Pet First Aid & CPR
Pet First Aid & CPR is one of our most popular and challenging classes. As an animal lover Peter welcomes the opportunity to provide animal carers and companions with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively assist an ill or injured animal and safely transport the casualty to the nearest veterinary clinic.
Pet First Aid is much more challenging than caring for an ill or injured human because relying on the Emergency Medical Services to deal with the incident, simply by calling 911, is not generally an option. When you can legitimately call 911 is covered in the class! Consequently, the first responders caring for an animal with a life threatening injury or illness are dependent upon their own skills, knowledge and resources. Prior preparation and planning, before a life threatening emergency, is the key to an effective response when faced with an animal medical emergency. The biggest challenge when responding to an ill or injured animal is to render appropriate and effective first aid while, at the same time, transporting the injured animal to the nearest veterinary clinic.
The class is "hands-on" and interactive. We provide canine and feline CPR manikins for extensive practice during the sessions dealing with cardiac and respiratory emergencies. Students improvise muzzles and splints in order to safely transport an injured animal. The class covers a wide range of subjects, injuries and illnesses including:
